Welcome to the Falcons!

Autumn Term 2022

This term our theme is Dinosaur Planet and we will be asking and answering the question "how do we know dinosaurs existed?"

We will travel back in time to the Mesozoic Era when the Dinosaurs roamed and ruled! We will find out how long they existed, where and how they survived. Crucially will learn about the inspirational work of Mary Anning who helped us to understand more about these 'terrible lizards'! We will learn about animal habitats and how each living thing has adapted to survive and thrive in their environment. We will also be delving into urban art, exploring the work of the mysterious artist Banksy, recreating some his work using stencilling techniques. In RE we will be considering the important subject of being thankful as well as learning about Judaism.

Some of the key questions are:

  • Why are there no more dinosaurs?
  • How do we know about dinosaurs?
  • How do all living things depend on each other?

The children have two PE sessions each week- Wednesday and Friday. Please make sure your child's PE kit is in school on these days.

Wednesday- Dance

Friday- Fundamental Movement Skills

Reading : Children should read daily at home. Please log the pages read and add a comment. If a book needs changing, the children need to put their reading record and book in the reading tray in the classroom just before registration.

Spellings: Each Friday, children will be tested on their spellings. New spellings will be discussed and a list posted on Class Dojo. They can also be practised daily using Spelling Shed.

Times Tables: Children should practise their times tables for 5 minutes each day. They can use TTRockstars to do this.

Homework: Each week the children will receive two pieces of homework, one piece of Maths and one reading comprehension text.

If you are unsure about anything, please do get in touch either by class dojo or email.

Science- The last two days we have been testing the strength of different magnets with some spectacular results!

Religious Education- Islam. The children learnt about one of the 5 pillars of Islam- Zakah. This is where Muslims donate money each month. Each group was given £10 and had to choose how much to give and who to- the poor, animal rescue, schools or the ill. This generated great teamwork and some insightful opinions!

Using Querns- As we are currently learning how Paleolithic Hunter Gatherers changed into Neolithic Farmers we explored one of the tools that they used- the quern. The children chose their own rubbing stone and experimented with different techniques to grind cornflakes as the farmers would have ground wheat into flour

Flint Knapping- The Falcons learnt how Stone Age people would make their spear heads out of flint in a process called knapping, so we did the same with soap!
